AP reported that Pope Francis is sending his personal envoy to Iraq in solidarity with the Christians forced from their homes by Islamic extremists.

The envoy Cardinal Fernando Filoni told AP that his aim will be to offer spiritual help to those forced to leave their homes by the Islamist extremists. ISIS has been operating in northern and western Iraq.

In a Vatican Radio interview, Cardinal Filoni acknowledged the difficulty he is facing in reaching the Christians of the region.

In the midst of more attacks by ISIS against Christian villages in northern Iraq, Pope Francis reiterated his call for the international community to take the necessary measures to protect Christians from violence.
