Republicans Saving US Interests Abroad Risk Backlash
Department of State GOP backlash

It is a fact that the Republican Party is more likely to start a war internationally if our interests are at risk. It is also a fact that the GOP uses the deployment of democracy and the protection of human rights as a cover to protect our interests abroad. But what happens when the same Republican Party, fostering policies to weaken our own democracy at home by failing to protect our voting rights, start crying wolf over other nations’ democracies? How could the GOP then empower our diplomats to protect our interests? With their position at home, the Republicans saving US interests abroad risk a big backlash by other western democratic nations who will call out our hypocrisy and bluff.

That’s the strong message Vice-President Kamala Harris, indirectly, delivered on Sunday when she told CBS Face The Nation:

We have been a role model saying, ‘You can see this and aspire to this and reject autocracies and autocratic leadership. Right now, we’re about to take ourselves off the map as a role model, if we let — if we let people destroy one of the most important pillars of a democracy, which is free and fair elections.MSNBC by Ja'han Jones - December 27, 2021
To protect our interests abroad, it starts with protecting the interests of all of our people at home.

PULLING THE RUG FROM UNDER OUR STATE DEPARTMENT AND THE PENTAGON

Those Republican States instituting strict voting rights laws only see the trees, never the forest. Their petty politicians, in the name of power, are clueless about the impact of their actions on the world stage. They don’t fully understand how important is our message to the rest of the world with regard to protecting human rights and the rule of law.

Next time we have a conflict overseas that impacts our interests directly and requires tough action, what do we tell the world? We are acting to protect democracy? What do you think the response to our hypocrisy might look like?

To protect our interests abroad, we must start by protecting the interests of all of our people here at home.

America can no longer speak about democracy to the rest of the world when its own is under attack by the very same people who are claiming it in the first place. All it takes is one clever and credible western leader to rise at the United Nations to denounce our hypocrisy for our diplomacy to come crashing down.

HEAD-IN-THE-SAND GOP

Don’t tell that to Mitch McConnell though. He knows the American voter is not smart enough to understand his double takes. But not so with the international western countries whose leaders and voters outsmart us by a mile and then some. They will point their fingers at our diplomats overseas and laugh out hard when they talk about democracy and the rule of law.

Is that what the GOP wants? For the United States to become the laughing stock of all their allies abroad?

Judging from their positions when it comes to voting rights of the American people, it seems they simply don’t care.
