Punditry StaffAmong all the va-et-viens Americans witnessed during the State of the Union address when President Biden toyed astutely with the Republicans, we also witnessed a sideshow of sort as one of the most honest Republican Senators, in Mitt Romney, confronted the newly elected serial liar George Santos by telling him bluntly that he did not belong in the House of Representatives. The fact that the GOP has welcomed and accepted Santos in its midst also represents the damaged GOP brand on display during Biden’s delivery many in the Republican leadership are failing to see.
The GOP today lives in that echo chamber believing they can wither any storm even those that question the morality of their decisions. As if voters did not reject extremism in the mid-term 2022 elections. Some, like Senator Mitt Romney, is not having any of this. Just as he wanted nothing to do with the criminal Donald Trump during the 45th President tenure.
Without Romney charting the high ground of decency and integrity, the GOP would look like a political organization that Manuel Noriega or Idi Amin started. This is how debased and out of touch the GOP has become.
Santos is hedging his bet by believing that the thin majority the GOP holds in the House will eventually dictate his fate.
THE WISDOM TO UNDERSTAND GOOD FROM EVIL
While good people populate and advance civilizational history, evil people represent the animal jungle they refuse to abandon where no principles or laws govern. It’s really gorilla land.
By accepting George Santos, the GOP has demonstrated it still lives in the jungle of indecency. There simply are no excuses for the Republican behavior wrapping their arms around a man whose evil knows no bounds. None whatsoever.
Many hide behind the notion that it’s up to his voters to decide Santos fate in 2024, which overlooks the next two years of damage Santos is capable of inflicting on Congress as well on his constituents, whose trust in him is all but disappeared, for his inability to serve them.
In the meantime, Santos is hedging his bet by believing that the thin majority the GOP holds in the House will eventually dictate his fate. The stars are lined up for his re-election in 2024 as he courts Speaker Kevin McCarthy to use his power and reach to raise the funds necessary for him to run again. Even though some 78% of his constituents want him to resign from office.
Only time will tell how reasonable and consciousnesses Republicans and Independents would react to Santos making his bed at 310 First Street while Ronna McDaniel provided the candles and the chamber pot.
LIVING IN A BUBBLE
Like we said, the GOP leadership lives in a bubble, and if it was not for Senator Romney to remind the leadership of its own debasement, many Americans would begin to accept lying congressional candidates as normal.
How many would-be George Santoses are looking into the possibility of running on a fake resume? We guarantee you there are plenty now analyzing different districts around the country for the same prospects. All they need to make sure is that the media ignores them.
Some will even contact foreign governments to fund their campaigns, which might also be the means by which Santos got hold of so much money mysteriously to run for Congress.
The notion that George Santos could win an election all based on lies says a lot about a corrupt political system unable to control its own. Maybe it was up to the media to place Santos under the microscope in the run-up to the mid-elections of 2022, but it is also the responsibility of the RNC to select candidates to represent its brand.
