The Myriads of Unworkable Means

When it comes to holding mass murderers and state actors, like Vladimir Putin committing crimes against humanity, the list of options is long with regard to the myriads of unworkable means. In laymen terms, there is no organization, court, or institution capable of punishing those who committed war crimes against humanity that fits perfectly with western values and needs. The world community has drafted and adopted the international laws to punish mass murderers, but the means to achieve justice, in and by itself, also the creation of the west in the form of the United Nations, falls on its face when it comes to accountability.

In short, the United Nations is a vehicle to punish outcast nations and disconnected actors, not those who usually commit crimes against humanity. The veto power at the U.N. has but erased any semblance of imposing international law against those who are most likely to commit atrocities, or their allies bidding their crimes.

Inequalities at the United Nations, expressed overtly with the veto system, happens to have become the U.N.’s Achilles’ Heel , which will eventually cause the body’s demise.

Putin will never see the inside of a prison no matter how many millions of civilians he kills. That’s the severely constipated system of international accountability the west has built.

THE ICC UNDER THE UNITED NATIONS

According to Wikipedia, the International Criminal Court (ICC) located in The Hague “is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal seated in The Hague, Netherlands. It is the first and only permanent international court with jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.”

But here is the twist. For any individual in any country to submit to its rulings, these countries must be signatories to the treaty that binds to ICC’s legal jurisdiction to the outcome of any criminal indictment. How many countries are signatories? Only 123 out of 195 if one considers the Palestinian Territories and the Vatican as countries. 72 countries do not recognize the authority of the ICC even though, like Russia and the United States, they sit on the National Security Council at the U.N.

Neither does Ukraine, which is calling for prosecuting Russia for crimes against humanity, is bound by the ICC rulings although it accepts its rulings. Go figure the sarcasm.

Because the ICC does not conduct trials in absentia, the Netherlands must first capture Vladimir Putin to prosecute him. Anyone cares to calculate the odds? Like we said, western designed to fall short for political convenience.

Imagine a criminal in any country not recognizing its court system as a way to escape culpability for their crimes. In short, that’s what the United Nations built with the ICC.

Putin will never see the inside of a prison no matter how many millions of civilians he kills. That’s the severely constipated system of international accountability the west has built.
