Punditry StaffThere is a war raging in Philadelphia with regard to the FCC renewing the broadcast license of a Fox local affiliate for the lies it disseminated about the 2020 elections. The Media and Democracy Project has filed a petition against that renewal. Considering that the right-wing media is going haywire about the indictment of Donald Trump, it is time for the FCC to revoke any Fox News license across the nation for their deliberate attempt at subverting our democracy.
Even today, Fox and other fringe crackpot media outlets, as Oliver Darcy wrote in a CNN article, continue to use dangerous rhetoric to blame this government for holding Trump accountable. They are doing so using inflammatory language such that it may cause violence down the road.
Fox and its harmful broadcasts cannot find refuge under the First Amendment rights.
HARMFUL AND TARGETED RHETORIC
Fox is using harmful and targeted rhetoric to describe the intent of the Biden Administration the American people voted into office to trust it with the duty of holding those who attempted to overturn our elections accountable.
Darcy writes:
This kind of language has but one purpose, which is to prepare the Trump followers to commit acts of violence against their own government. Not only did Fox spread the lies about the 2020 elections, but now it seems it has a broader game plan. One that aims to lead us possibly to a civil war. Fox has become a direct threat to our democracy.
Fox and its harmful broadcasts cannot find refuge under the First Amendment rights. In doing so, we are destroying our own democracy by providing Fox and its owners the luxury of deciding any election outcome through intimidation and the threat of violence.
The Murdoch family will not stop until it destroys our Democratic institutions that do not walk to the tune of their drums.
KILL FOX TODAY
The FCC has a responsibility to kill Fox because it has become a threat to this country. The news organization cannot continue to operate with the purpose of broadcasting misinformation whose aim is to destroy the very fabric of our institutions. What purpose will the First Amendment serve if the whole country is under attack by right-wing extremists?
The FCC and the Department of Justice have a duty to act decisively on this issue. The Murdoch family will not stop until it destroys our Democratic institutions that do not walk to the tune of their drums. Ones that are full of hate, racism, and supremacy innuendos. It’s inevitable if the FCC does not send the right signals in Philadelphia.
Trump remains a threat. But more importantly, Fox is intent on riding his coattails by providing the singular weapon that may one day destroy this nation. What form is it taking? Slow and simmering incitement whose purpose is to eventually lead us to another more perilous boiling point.
Should the FCC stand down, the Biden Administration may come to regret this move. Maybe not immediately, but down the road, when Fox rhetoric becomes the rallying cry of a war machine. To believe this might not happen is to believe in the tooth fairy.
Remember our words. Just like Fox viewers are remembering theirs in the comfort of their living rooms today. But tomorrow in the comfort of their fatigue outfits and well-oiled guns. It is time for the FCC not to renew Fox News licenses as a message to all extremists.
