Punditry StaffAs the loathsome Senator Kyrsten Sinema and her corrupt colleague Senator Joe Manchin turn against their own party and constituents over legislation to protect the voting rights of all Americans, the Biden Administration should look into the matter to withhold federal funds to states violating these rights. If not by hook, then by crook, we say.
Whether this is legally possible, we will leave it to experts to answer that question. But the power and prestige of this White House is on the line if this President just gives up on this important legislation at times when there are evil forces trying to dismantle our democracy.
If you recall, President Biden was lukewarm towards voting rights in the first place. Only when his polling numbers with African-Americans tanked, did he start taking this matter more seriously.
President Biden’s popularity is not getting any better, which might point to the idiom of explaining the meaning of insanity.
IF FOR MASK MANDATES, WHY NOT FOR VOTING RIGHTS?
An article appeared on NBC News website entitled “Arizona at risk of losing relief funds over anti-mandate rules, Biden administration warns” states the following:
If President Biden’s Treasury Department is warning to recuperate funds for mask mandates, why not threaten to withhold funds for any State that violates our voting rights; to start with the States of Arizona and West Virginia? Let Manchin and Sinema explain to their constituents why they voted against the filibuster rule change, as they promised to do, to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
Would this hot potato make the president less popular among independents in some states? Maybe, but at least Biden would show he is serious about the protection of our democracy. No one man’s election is supreme to our system of government.
Furthermore, such a move would bypass Manchin and Sinema who have turned their backs on the Democratic Party. Both Senators have assumed the doggie position in return for Republicans funding their next re-election campaigns.
Our country can ill-afford two things at this point in our history. A President who lacks the guts to act, but instead makes good speeches. The other is to go to siesta while evil men are plotting the weakening of American democracy. All for pure white supremacist power.
I say withhold precious Federal funds from States violating our voting rights. Let the chips fall where they may. President Biden’s popularity is not getting any better, which might point to the idiom of explaining the meaning of insanity.
